Privacy Policy — Classic Snake

Classic Snake is a single-player game. The game itself runs entirely on your device: the rules, the scores and the board never leave it. Since version 1.2 it can also show you an advert, but only when you ask it to, and since version 1.4 it counts how it is being played. Both are described below.

What is collected

By the game: how the game is played, and nothing about you.

Version 1.4 added analytics. There are still no accounts and no sign-in, and the game never asks for or sends your name, your email, your contacts, your files or your location. What it does send is described under “Analytics” below: it is a record of what happened in a game, not of who was playing it.

By the adverts: see below. Version 1.2 added one optional advert — the “CONTINUE” button on the game-over card, which plays a short video and lets you carry on from where you died. It is never forced: if you do not press it, no advert is ever requested.

Analytics

From version 1.4 the game uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count how it is being played, so that it can be made better at the parts people actually use. Unlike the advert, it is on to begin with and runs from the moment the app opens.

You can switch it off. Options → ANALYTICS. Turning it off stops the collection there and then, and it stays off until you turn it back on. Nothing below is sent while it is off.

What is sent is a short list of things that happened, each with a few numbers about the game:

• a run finished — its score, level, how many seconds it lasted, which mode and pace, and whether pickups were on
• the first run this installation ever finished, and how long it lasted
• a daily challenge finished — its score and the length of your streak
• an achievement unlocked — which one
• the share sheet was opened, the CONTINUE advert was offered, and whether it was watched
• which screen was opened: the menu, options, scores or achievements

Alongside those, Google’s SDK collects the ordinary measurement data it collects for any app: an app-instance identifier that is specific to this installation, your device model and operating system version, your language and country, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and how long the app was open.

What is not sent. No name, no email address, no account, no contacts, no files, no precise location. The game never sets a user identity of any kind, so the events above cannot be tied to a person by anyone — including the developer, who only ever sees them counted up across everybody.

Google’s explanation of how it handles this is at support.google.com/firebase/answer/6318039. Uninstalling the app stops the collection and orphans the app-instance identifier.

Adverts

The adverts come from Google AdMob. When an advert is requested, Google’s Mobile Ads SDK collects and shares the following, for advertising, analytics and fraud prevention:

• IP address, used to estimate roughly where the device is
• App interactions, such as the advert being shown, watched or tapped
• Diagnostic information, such as crash and performance data
• Device and account identifiers, including the Android advertising ID

All of it is encrypted in transit. None of it passes through the developer: it goes from your device to Google, and the developer only ever sees aggregate earnings figures with nothing personal in them. Google’s own explanation of how it handles this data is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Your controls. You can reset or delete the advertising ID at any time in Android’s settings, under Settings → Privacy → Ads. If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, the app shows Google’s consent form before any advert is requested, and your answer decides whether adverts can be personalised.

What is stored on your device

The app saves the following in its own private storage:

• your top five scores at each pace, and today’s daily-challenge best
• lifetime tallies: games played, apples eaten, longest snake, deepest level and longest streak
• your daily-challenge streak, and which of the last seven days you played
• which achievements you have won, and the date you were last asked for a review
• your settings: pace, walls, sound, music, vibration, power-ups, reduced motion, colour-blind palette, the analytics switch and the chosen skin
• your consent answer, if you were asked for one

It also writes a few short sound-effect files into its private cache the first time it runs, so it does not have to generate them again.

All of this stays on your phone. Uninstalling the app removes it.

Android backup

If you have Android’s automatic backup turned on, the Android operating system may include your saved scores and settings in the backup it makes to your own Google Drive. This is done by Android, not by this app, and the developer has no access to it. You can turn it off in your device settings under Google → Backup.

Permissions

• VIBRATE — the short buzz when you eat food or crash.
• INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE — used to send the analytics described above, to fetch an advert when you press CONTINUE, and by the consent form.
• com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID — lets the advert use the Android advertising ID described above.

Children

The game is suitable for all ages. It is not directed at children. The analytics described above are collected from everyone who plays, and none of them identify a person. If a child uses the device, the same advertising ID controls in Android’s settings apply.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same address with a new date at the top.
